The University of Chicago received $100 million dollars from an anonymous alumnus whose gift will help about 1,200 students each year. Students whose families earn between $60,000 and $75,000 will see their loans cut in half.
“I give this gift in the hopes that future generation of students will not be prevented from attending the College because of financial incapacity and may graduate without the siren of debt distracting them from fulfilling unremunerative dreams,” the donor said in a statement released by the university.
According to the university, the anonymous donor came from a modest background, graduated in the 1980s, and enjoyed Greek literature classes.

Billionaire Believes in Conditional Giving
May 22, 2007
There is a significant catch to oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens‘ recent donation of $50 million each to two Texas health care institutions.
Neither institution can spend a cent until it has nurtured (through investment) its $50 million gift egg into a $500 million egg basket.
Each institution has 25 years to hit $500 million. If they hit it, they may spend the money however they see fit. If they miss it, they may keep the original $50 million but must give any money they have made from investments on the gift to another non-profit. www.philanthropy.com
